The old Routemaster 1960’s open back bus has all but disappeared from London’s streets. Considered iconic by many Londoners (and others) they were taken out of service for good reasons, mainly age, maintenance costs and safety, in 2006. However the candidate for London mayor says he will bring it back to London streets to return the authenticity of our city. Now, while I know the shape of the bus is known the world over is it not time to move on? Ironically at the same time more opponents of the current government want the Routemasters “faster” replacements “the bendy bus” removed from the streets also because of high maintenance costs and safety.
According to our new candidate mayor… “It’s not beyond the wit of man to design a new Routemaster which will stand as an icon of this city.” all at the cost it’s residents no doubt. Council tax increase anyone?
