One of my favourite pictures taken recently. This is a street sign for Platz des 18. M?rz in front of the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, built in 1791. The gate was extensively restored in 2001 with much stone being replaced. Actually it's quite amazing that this monument still stands considering the number of battles that have been fought around it.
The difficultly with any famous monument is to take a picture that is not just another snap that has been seen a millions times before...
It is on the Platz des 18. M?rz, about 20 meteres behind where this picture was taken, in the then West German part of Berlin that, in 1987, U.S. President Ronald Reagan said his famous words... "Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!". Two and a half years later on November 9, 1989, the wall fell.
